The Basic Measurements
Width
Measure the opening at its widest point, from inside edge to inside edge of the door frame. Take measurements at the top, middle, and bottom.use the smallest number.
Height
Measure from the floor to the top of the opening. Again, measure at both sides and use the smaller number if they differ.
Headroom
This is the distance from the top of the door opening to the ceiling or lowest obstruction. Most standard openers need 12-15 inches of headroom.
Side Room
Measure the distance from the edge of the opening to the wall on each side. Standard installations require 3.5-4 inches on each side.
Backroom
The depth of your garage from the door opening to the back wall. Your door needs this space when opening.
